What Exactly Is Hypnosis?

The definition of hypnosis is, "A trance-like state in which a person becomes more aware and focused and is more open to suggestion." Many people get the incorrect connotation of what hypnosis means, they assume that they will be pushed to quack like a duck or honk anytime someone says a specific word.

This is what is projected for amusement purposes on television - it is not how hypnosis really works for those utilizing it to minimize tension, stop smoking, or to promote weight loss in their lives. You do not stare at a swaying object and immediately lose consciousness. It's performed in a controlled, relaxing manner to help put you into a daydream like state - while you're awake and fully aware of what's going on around you.

The dream like state is more of a moment of calm when your mind is uninhibited with thoughts and opens to a different method of thinking. Those who utilize hypnosis tap into their subconscious mind to change their normal pattern of thinking.

For instance, if the urge to smoke is great, they might utilize hypnosis to modify their thinking so that smoking is no longer a priority - that it is an unconstructive action that is undesirable to them.

While undergoing hypnosis, you're simply planting seeds of thoughts into your subconscious mind so that they'll take root and grow from there. The more practice you get, the stronger those patterns of thinking will become until your behavior is changed for the better.

Everyone can experience hypnosis naturally as well. Have you ever been so into a book that you're totally concentrating on the pages and 30 minutes later realize that you didn't notice anything going on around you?

Maybe you just found yourself in a zoned out state where you're so centered on a particular thing that you have no idea someone is speaking to you right then.

Hypnosis is related to a zoned-out state of awareness.

The person is well aware of what's happening, but they are only concentrated on the hypnotic attraction and not on any other environmental stimuli taking place around them.

When you've successfully reached a hypnotic state, you - or a hypnosis specialist - can plant alternative thoughts into your unconscious mind to help change your thought process.

Hypnosis is not a process which will cure your issues in one sitting. It is a process that slowly occurs over more than one session in order to become successful, even though lots of people report feeling better after just a single session.

You need to be unbiased to the method in order for it to have the desired results. If you go in with too many doubts, it most likely will not be successful, or it may take longer to attain the desired results.
